about

David Young may not be the biggest name in the jazz history books, but we'll always remember him fondly for this great little album on Mainstream – a set that's maybe one of the more spiritual session on the label in the early 70s! Young plays tenor, and he's got a group that's all-hip, all the way through – with Virgil Jones on trumpet, Sonny Fortune on baritone and flute, Harold Mabern on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums! There's definitely currents here that echo some of the work that Fortune and Mabern would soon do on Strata East – as the tunes have an offbeat, soulful vibe – partly lyrical, partly swinging – but also with lots of Young's own voice in the mix, too. The Mainstream Records production brings out some of the warmer currents in the music – and titles include "Pisces On The Cusp", "For You With Love", "Down Yonder", "Joe Splivingates", "Friday The Fourteenth" and "Animated Suspension". © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
